About Us

Powys FHS was founded in 1980 and covers the pre-1974 counties of Breconshire, Radnorshire and Montgomeryshire.

Powys is a county of central Wales, created in 1974, area 5,080 sq km/1,961 sq miles. The main town and administrative headquarters is Llandrindod Wells. The population in 1991 was 117,500, of which approximately 20% are Welsh speaking.

Features include the Brecon Beacons National Park; Black Mountains; the River: Wye and Severn, which both rise on Plynlimon in Dyfed; Lake Vyrnwy, artificial reservoir supplying Liverpool and Birmingham; alternative technology centre near Machynlleth. The main Industries are agriculture, dairy cattle, and sheep.
