About Us

We are a friendly society whose forefathers lived and worked in North Meols. Their descendants are now to be found around the world. Meetings are held monthly in Churchtown, Southport.

The Society's wide range of publications includes one-name extracts from the North Meols parish records, 1851 Census Returns, records from local churches, North Meols Tithe Map (1839-40), the Birkdale Tithe Map, local videos and publications by local authors.

The area was isolated and slow developing. The cluster of cottages around the church became known as Churchtown. Churchtown village was for centuries the most populated area in North Meols. However in the latter years of the eighteenth century sea-bathing grew in popularity. William Sutton, known as the "Old Duke" opened the original Duke's Folly Hotel and in the nineteenth century there grew the new town of Southport.

In just over one hundred years of careful planning, it developed as a most attractive seaside and residential resort. Visitors today who take the short journey from Southport to Churchtown find a charming village with its thatched cottages, St Cuthbert's Church and the beautiful Botanic Gardens a delight to visit.
