For local government and administrative purposes, Clwyd was split in 1996 into the unitary authorities of Flintshire, Wrexham County Borough, Denbighshire, and parts of Conwy and Powys. The "preserved county" of Clwyd was established at the same time, mainly for ceremonial purposes. area 2,420 sq km/934 sq mi. towns and cities Mold (administrative headquarters), Flint, Denbigh, Wrexham; seaside resorts: Colwyn Bay, Rhyl, Prestatyn features Rivers: Dee, Clwyd; Clwydian range of mountains with Offa's Dyke along the main ridge; Chirk, Denbigh, Flint, and Rhuddlan castles; Greenfield Valley, NW of Flint, was in the forefront of the Industrial Revolution before the advent of steam and now has a museum of industrial archaeology Clwyd FHS covers the pre-1974 counties of Flintshire and Denbighshire and a small part of Merionethshire.
