About Us

ALL CD ROMS NOW HALF PRICE The city of Bradford grew from a market town and became a world famous Yorkshire textile manufacturing centre from the mid-19th century. It was also noted for the extraction and working of coal, iron and stone, and was served by a transport infrastructure of canal, railway and road. The census Registration District of Bradford, West Riding is used as the Society's geographical area of interest and covers much more than the original township of Bradford. Within this area are townships and hamlets, such as:-

Adwalton, Allerton, Bierley, Bolton, Bolton Woods, Bowling, Bradford Moor, Buttershaw, Calverley, Clayton, Cleckheaton, Cullingworth Gate, Denholme, Drighlington, Dudley Hill, East Bierley, East Bowling, Eccleshill, Fagley, Farsley, Frizinghall, Fulneck, Great Horton, Greengates, Heaton, Hewenden, Horton, Hunsworth, Idle, Laisterdyke, Lidget Green, Little Horton, Low Moor, Manningham, Nab Wood, North Bierley, Oakenshaw, Odsal, Pudsey, Queensbury, Saltaire, Scholes, Shipley, Thornbury, Thornton, Toftshaw, Tong, Troydale, Tyersal, Undercliffe, West Bowling, Wibsey, Wilsden, Windhill, Wrose and Wyke

Bradford Family History Society was founded in 1982 and is an independent organisation and limited company run by volunteers who are elected at its Annual General Meeting. It is now well-established with a world-wide membership and committed to promoting Family History by education, mutual assistance, demonstrations, lectures, excursions and any other means conducive to its advancement. The Bradford Family History Society is a member society of the Federation of Family History Societies and of the Yorkshire Group of Family History Societies.

Two regular meetings are held each month - one on the third Monday evening of each month and one on the morning of the first Thursday. At both of these meetings, members can hear a variety of speakers on topics of family and local history interest. Due to coronavirus restrictions meetings are currently online by Zoom and all members are welcome. They can discuss their research with fellow members over tea or coffee beforehand. In addition, there are occasionally other meetings for specific purposes such as Getting Started Workshops, "Drop in" help sessions. The Society’s own publications are on sale and exchange journals from other Societies are available for borrowing. Leaflets about relevant local events are on display.

Further assistance with research can be obtained from a limited search service (for members only) depending on access to the local studies library and archives. The Society has produced several local publications, details of which can be obtained through the quarterly journal “Bod-Kin”, in which a listing of newly submitted members’ own family history interests can be found, and from the Society’s website at www.bradfordfhs.org.uk. This provides details of publications and how to obtain them online, information about the Society’s programme of talks, plus how to join this friendly Society. The website also has a members’ only section for entering family history interests and communicating with other members and viewing our journal and exchange journals.

Our NEW website stared in 2019 but we apologise that the name search facility for our publications may not be available. Due to increasing printing and publication costs membership subscriptions will increase by £2 in 2021 to £12 for UK membership, £17 for Family and Overseas membership. We have introduced a new Online Worldwide membership, available for UK and overseas, which will remain at £10, with full access to the website and members' area but no printed copy of the "Bod-Kin".

In the current coronavirus pandemic we will continue to respond to email enquiries, please see contact details on our website. We request that you choose downloadable versions of our publications whenever possible. This is for the safety of our officers, postal workers and yourselves, our customers. The downloads contain exactly the same data and are delivered to you immediately. Thank you and enjoy your family history research while you stay safe at home.
