DEVON WILLS By C. Worthy

£ 7.50
   + P&P
You will probably be aware that most of the wills belonging to the West Country were destroyed in an air raid on Exeter during the Second World War. Whilst copies are being found genealogists and local historians have to rely heavily of transcriptions and extractions made prior to this loss. Of these useful works Devonshire Wills by C. Worthy is one of the most important. This massive work of 516 pages is divided between 309 pages of will and administrations and 206 pages of the genealogies of 31 Devonshire families. As well as the usual index at the back of the book, this CD version can also be searched by using the search facility in Adobe Acrobat, making this a most useful CD to anyone whose interests lie in the county of Devon .

Devonshire Wills and Administrations 1540-1799

£ 18.13

Free P&P!

Published in 1908 by The British Record Society this superb book is a list of the calendars of wills and administrations proved in the Court of the Archdeaconry of Exeter 1540-1799. (A calendar of wills is a list of wills arranged by year, and then alphabetical within each year, names and places of residence, and not the actual wills themselves. But those wills still exist and can be ordered from the county record office). Using this CD you can find the name that you are researching in the alphabetical index and then go to the page of the book that relates to that name. Here you can see if and when a will was proved for that person. Remember that wills are an absolutely invaluable resource for genealogists as it is often possible to build up a very detailed picture of how the person lived by seeing what kind of items he or she passed on to relatives (and find out exactly which relatives were around at the time too!)
