Understanding Documents for Genealogy and Local History by Bruce Durie

Understanding Documents for Genealogy and Local History by Bruce Durie
This book details how to find and comprehend documents from 1560 to the 1860s, including wills, testaments, contracts, land records, official records, deeds, and more. The Latin glossary is especially useful for helping translate any Latin documents.

Genealogists and local historians have probably seen every birth, marriage, death and census record available, and are adept at using the internet for research. However, once they have learnt everything they can from them, the next step is reading and understanding older documents. These can be hard to find, are often written in challenging handwriting and use legal and other unfamiliar terms. Some will be in Latin, antiquated English or Scots. Readers need to be able to understand the nature and intent of a range of documents as well as the palaeography (the handwriting) and orthography (the 'shape' of the contents).

In Understanding Documents for Genealogy and Local History, Dr Bruce Durie, the celebrated author of Scottish Genealogy, details how to find and comprehend documents from 1560 to the 1860s - wills, testaments, contracts, indentures and charters, land records (retours, sasines and manorial custumals), personal letters, official records, Church papers, trust dispositions, deeds and others. Also covered are the complexities of dates, numbers, calendars, measurements and money, abbreviations, transcription conventions, letter-forms and glossaries. A Latin primer completes the tool kit the genealogist and family historian will need to further their research.

Your Irish Ancestors: A Guide for Family Historians by Ian Maxwell

Your Irish Ancestors: A Guide for Family Historians by Ian Maxwell
Your Irish Ancestors provides an entertaining insight into everyday life in Ireland during the past four centuries. Aimed primarily at the family and social historian, Ian Maxwell's highly readable guide introduces researchers to the wealth of material available in archives throughout Ireland.

Many records, like the early twentieth century census returns and school registers will be familiar to researchers, but others have been traditionally overlooked by all but the most experienced genealogists. Each chapter takes the form of a detailed social history showing how the lives of our ancestors changed over the centuries and how this is reflected in the records that have survived, and it is in this broad historical approach that Ian Maxwell's work stands out from other guides to Irish genealogy.

'Your Irish Ancestors' is more than just a technical 'how-to-do it' book, for it will help family historians put their ancestral research in historical perspective, giving them a better understanding of the world in which their ancestors lived.

*Easy-to-use guide to records of Irish ancestry for family history researchers
*Detailed social history showing how our ancestors lived
*Puts family history research in a wide historical perspective
*Information on all the records kept by major archives and museums
*Features less well-known museums and archives

Allegations for Marriage Licences in the Archdeaconry of Sudbury in the County of Suffolk 1684-1839

£ 21.44

Free P&P!

Published by the Harleian Society 1918-1921 in four volumes. The very first entry in 1684 reads "John Murrell, of Lawshall, husbandman, & Sarah Richier, of Hepworth. Bondsman: Robert Garland, of Weltham, Husbandman. 3 Jan., 1684/5."
This class of records are incredibly valuable to the family historian, as prior to 1837 marriages in parish registers did not state the fathers name, and also rarely stated an occupation of the groom. It is well worth noting that there are many people here who were from outside the county of Suffolk, so these records will appeal to a wide range of researchers. The four books are arranged in date order and are fully indexed for names.
