The Train Builders

Arranged in alphabetical order of surname, this index contains the names and occupations of over three thousand workers employed in the Great Northern Railway works in March 1887. The railway engineering works (known locally as the Plant) was the largest employer in Doncaster from its opening in 1853. Each entry gives surname and initial, occupation, department, check number and the number of the book in which his name appears. Compiled by Pamela Lindley (D&DFHS, 2001).

When the Great Northern Railway (G.N.R. ) was setting up a permanent workshop for its rapidly expanding company in the 1850s, Peterborough was earmarked for this development but Doncaster was eventually chosen, with G.N.R.'s engineering works at Boston in Lincolnshire moving to Doncaster.

Indexed in surname order showing details of almost 6,000 of those employed in the Carriage and Wagon Works and over 9,000 of those employed in the Locomotive Works. Each entry includes details such as surname, forename, occupation, date of birth, date started, date left, rates of pay and reason for leaving. On some entries there are various other miscellaneous details.
