Maps

The maps listed in this section fall into two categories:

1. Godfrey Edition Maps are reproductions of old Ordnance Survey maps. The original maps were at a scale of 1:2500, but they have been reproduced to a scale of about 1:4340 or about 15 inches to 1 mile. Each map includes a description of the area covered and some text from contemporary documents such as street directories. Covering districts within Bristol, Bath and North Somerset in great detail.

2. Cassini Historical Maps (formerly Timeline Maps) are reproductions of Ordnance Survey one-inch "Old Series", "Revised New Series" and "Popular Edition" maps which have been enlarged to match modern 1:50,000 OS Landranger series of maps. As a result, the past can be compared with the present to an extent not possible with any other combination of maps. The maps provide not only invaluable evidence of long-forgotten place names and land usages, but also an overview of the landscape inhabited by previous generations. Covering Bristol, Bath and the surrounding area.
