CD-ROMs & Downloads

CD-ROM resources transcribed and published by volunteers of the Bristol & Avon Family History Society. Baptismal, marriage and burials CDs are transcribed from the parish registers where they exist and are legible, otherwise Bishop's Transcripts are used. Most notably, the registers for the central Bristol parishes of St Peter, St Mary le Port and Temple (aka Holy Cross) were destroyed or damaged during World War 2.

The majority of our CD publications are also available as downloadable PDF files. Files are delivered directly to your computer via the internet and can be ready for use within a few minutes of their purchase being confirmed (depending on the file size and speed of your internet connection). Downloadable files are offered at a lower price than the equivalent CDs, and of course, there are no postage and packing charges.

To view the contents of our CDs and downloadable PDF files, you will require a desktop or laptop computer (PC or Apple Mac) equipped with an optical disk drive (CD, DVD or Blu-ray) and a PDF viewer such as Adobe Reader.

Our CDs are guaranteed against manufacturing defects for a period of one year from the date of purchase. Customers are responsible for providing a secure backup copy of their downloadable files.

Bristol Apprenticeship Books Volumes 1(o) to 1(z) 1724-2009 - Click for large image
Available as a CD and a downloadable PDF file. The Bristol Record Office (BRO) holds a continuous series of Apprenticeship Records dating from 1532 to 2009. They are contained in a set of 26 books, known as The Bristol Apprenticeship Books and were originally identified by the BRO as Volumes AB/1(a) to AB/1(z).

This CD contains the 12 most recent volumes, namely 1(o) to 1(z) and its contents are divided into an Apprentice Name Index, Father's Trade Index, Father's Abode Index, Master's Name Index, Master's Trade Index and a transcription of each volume (click the links to see an example). Approximately 24,000 entries.

Volume coverage:
Volume 1(o) 1724-1740; Volume 1(p) 1740-1760; Volume 1(q) 1760-1761
Volume 1(r) 1754-1764; Volume 1(s) 1764-1777; Volume 1(t) 1777-1787
Volume 1(u) 1787-1798; Volume 1(v) 1798-1810; Volume 1(w) 1810-1820
Volume 1(x) 1820-1830; Volume 1(y) 1830-1849; Volume 1(z) 1847-2009

The Apprentice Books of Bristol are very strongly linked with the Burgess Books of Bristol (also available as a CD elsewhere on this webpage). It was only the Burgesses, in other words the Freemen of the City, who were entitled, moreover, obliged to take on Apprentices. Furthermore, serving an apprenticeship to a freeman was one of the ways in which an individual could in turn become a Freeman.

Indexes to Bristol Record Office Tithe Apportionment Books - Click for large image
Available as a CD and a downloadable PDF file, the contents are divided into an occupier index and an owner index (click the links to see an example).

The Bristol Record Office holds the Tithe Maps and Apportionment books for many parishes within the Bristol diocese. These records, which cover mainly the country parishes can be of great value to family historians. They may help to locate an ancestor's home, show the amount of property they owned or rented, and as most are dated between 1840 and 1850 perhaps aid in finding them in the censuses for 1841 and or 1851.

Parishes included:
Abbots Leigh, Almondsbury, Alveston, Bedminster, Bitton, Brislington, Bristol Philip & Jacob, Clifton, Cold Ashton, Compton Greenfield, Dodington, Doynton, Dyrham & Hinton, Elberton, Filton, Frampton Cotterell, Frenchay, Hanham, Henbury, Horfield, Iron Acton, Mangotsfield, Marshfield, Oldland, Olveston, Pucklechurch, Shirehampton, St George, Stapleton, Stoke Gifford, Syston, Tormarton, Wapley & Codrington, West Littleton, Westbury on Trym, Westerleigh, Whitchurch, Wick & Abson, Winterbourne, Yate.

Butcher, Baker, Candle Maker. Chipping Sodbury from 1795 - Click for large image
Available as a CD and a downloadable PDF file, the contents are organised by the 1795 Chipping Sodbury map reference. Click to see an example of the contents.

In 1795, a map of all the properties in Chipping Sodbury was produced to aid the setting of the Poor Law Rate. Many of the owners, occupiers and trades carried on in these properties have been tracked up to the present time using sources such as deeds, directories and census data. The CD contains a pictorial record of all the properties with details of known occupiers since 1795.

This CD is the result of a project originated by the Sodbury Vale Family History Group of the Bristol & Avon Family History Society.

A PDF file containing an index of 1262 surnames recorded in alphabetical order with each map reference number is available to be downloaded free of charge.
