Description

Alphabetical lists of Hertfordshire men aged between 18 and 45 who were eligible for service in the Militia forces of England. The ballot lists date from 1758 to 1786, exceptionally to 1801. Hertfordshire has an exceptionally large collection of these lists, although not fully complete. They are the nearest thing we have to a census of the period.
