This is the companion volume to the Wiltshire Militia Orders 1759-1770, edited by Jean Cole and published by Wiltshire FHS in 1994.

The Wiltshire Regiment of Militia was embodied three years after the beginning of the Seven Years War [1756-1763]. This war was the world wide conflict between Britain and France for colonial possession in America and India. In Europe the war was between Prussia supported by Britain and Hanover, against the alliance of France, Austria, Russia, Sweden and Spain.

William Pitt, the elder, masterminded the British involvement and Britain's shores were guarded by county regiments of militia who were bodies of civilians trained and regularly exercised for the defence of the country.

These county regiments were to make themselves readily available to guard Britain's coasts against invasion by the enemy and they were never required to serve outside Great Britain. Men were drawn from the English and Welsh counties by ballot and either served as balloted men or as volunteers or substitutes as decreed by the Militia Acts.
