CS085 Coroners Records Wiltshire County 1815-1858

Description

A4 softback. 56 pages

There were several Wiltshire county coroners during the period from 1815 to 1858 and it is hoped that most of them have been identified as to their place of abode [see Appendix 1]. Coroners submitted their bills of expenses to the county treasurer for mileage undertaken to take an inquisition upon notification of a sudden or suspicious death which had happened in their particular district. It was known for a coroner to occasionally travel further afield, at times, to hold an inquest out of the county.

The following bills are the surviving examples of some of the 19th century Wiltshire coroners.

Names of deceased have been placed in alphabetical order for easy reference, however, in so doing, this revealed a number of anomalies with duplication of several names with inquests bearing the same date, but with different reference numbers, relating to different expense bills. It is quite possible that various coroners may have had to repeat a journey when an inquest was adjourned for more evidence, thereby revealing additional travelling expenses, or, perhaps, return mileages. It is recommended that the list of coroners' names and their districts [Appendix 1] should be consulted whenever an entry has been found.
