The Database on this CD provides records of approximately 274,500 persons found in the many 'Returns of Papists'; 1705-6, 1711, 1735, 1745, 1767 and 1780 plus other sources listed at the end of the 30 page introduction. For each entry in the database the following facts may be available:

  • Year

  • Surname and Forename(s)

  • Status / Occupation

  • Age (Yrs)

  • Length of Residence

  • County / Country

  • Parish / Town / Street

  • Birthplace / Source-1

  • References / Source-2

  • Notes & Comments

The amount of information given varies and it is rare to find that all of these fields contain information for an individual. The data has been compiled over very many years by Brother Rory Higgins FSC of Australia and other members of the Catholic Family History Society.

The CD is designed to AutoRun if the Windows computer is activated for Autostart, failing that there is instruction in the "Start.txt" .. i.e. double-click "CD_Start.exe"

MAC users; insert the disc then double-click the new CD desktop icon and navigate to find the various files & folders

The Database is presented in three versions .. all of which may be copied onto the users computer for personal research.

  • 1-Access version: The file size approximately 128 MB. A single interactive table of rows and columns which requires Microsoft Office software (Access 2003 or later) to open, read/write or manipulate.
  • 2-Excel version: The file size approximately 20 MB. A single interactive table of rows and columns which requires Microsoft Office software (Excel 2007 or later) to open, read/write or manipulate.
  • 3-PDF (Portable Document Format) version: The file size approximately 19 MB. A single static view of the above table of rows and columns. It can be viewed on any computer which has a PDF viewer installed, irrespective of the computer type or operating system. It is approximately 3,348 pages, 35½"wide x 18"deep, requiring sideways scrolling. Although word searchable, this is a slow and inefficient way to find the data and is not recommended.

To achieve the best results from this database it is imperative that either the Access or Excel version be used, which can be interrogated with queries and/or multiple filters to extract data into bespoke tables.
