About UsManchester & Lancashire FHS was established in 1964 making it one of the oldest in the country. It is also one of the larger societies with over 3,500 members worldwide. The society today is chiefly concerned with family history in the Greater Manchester area and has branches in Oldham and Bolton but we also support many members whose research interests lie well outside this area. Our Resource centre in central Manchester is available on payment of a small fee and contains a wide variety of source material in printed, microform and CDROM formats. Our Anglo-Scottish and Irish Ancestry Branches provide particular support to those with ancestors in Scotland and Ireland respectively. We are active in projects to transcribe and index local source material both mainstream (such as parish register and census data) and more specialist such as police records and admissions to the local asylum.
