About Us

The beautiful County of Dorset lies on the South Coast of England where agriculture is the main industry. The main coastal towns of Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth cater for an influx of holiday makers during the summer months with the latter two having ferry links to the Channel Islands, France and Spain. Dorset, and in particular Tolpuddle, is famous for "The Tolpuddle Martyrs" and nearby Dorchester for Judge Jefferies, "The Hanging Judge", and the author and poet Thomas Hardy.

The Dorset Family History Society is the only Society dedicated to the County of Dorset. It was founded by a group of like minded individuals in 1988 and became affiliated to the FFHS in 1989. From those humble beginnings it is now a thriving and well liked Society. Although based in Poole, there are Members throughout the country, with visitors to the Treetops Research Centre coming from all over the world.

As a Society our objective is to promote and encourage the study of genealogy, heraldry and local history with particular reference to the County of Dorset. To help achieve these objectives the members of the Society, and guests, regularly meet on a monthly basis at a local hall where a variety of guest speakers, on a wide range of topics, entertain and inform those who attend. A Journal is published quarterly for members and there are also regular workshops at the Research Centre, where complete novices are introduced to the hobby and those with a bit more experience can have their horizons widened.
