About Us

We are a "Self-help Group" and were formed to help people living in the UK with research into their German-speaking European ancestors. If you have, or believe you have, ancestors from German-speaking parts of Europe, we should be able to help. We were formed in 1987 and now have about 1,000 members, mainly living in London and South East England but also from other parts of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Germany and other parts of mainland Europe, North America, Australasia and Africa.

We publish an award-winning quarterly magazine, "Mitteilungsblatt" (ie "Newsletter" - don't worry it is in English - you do not need to understand German to benefit from membership!). We also publish booklets on how to undertake your research from the UK and on other aspects of German life in the UK now and in the past.

You can join the Society or renew your existing membership on-line at this website using your credit card. When we receive your subscription, if you are a new member, we will send you a form to fill in with details of your interests which will then be published in the Mitteilungsblatt.

You will also be sent a "Welcome Booklet" which contains details of all the services and research sources the Society offers including: our "Names Index" which contains over 500,000 entries relating to Germans, principally in UK; a set of volumes 1 to 133 of the "Genealogisches Handbuch des Adels" (the Genealogical Handbook of the Aristocracy); our collection of CD-ROMs which include volumes 1 to 215 of the Deutsche Geschlechterbuch (Landed Gentry); help with identifying places in the former German and Austrian Empires, with finding archives in East and Central Europe and with translation.

The Society's publications are available at discounted prices to fully-paid-up members of the Society but only if they buy direct from the Society's postal bookshop and pay by sterling cheque. If you use the credit card facility available via this website you have to pay the full price. However to members outside UK this is still substantially cheaper than paying the Members' price by banker's draft!
