The Hampshire Genealogical Society was founded in 1973 with the aim of encouraging family history research. The HGS is affiliated to the Federation of Family History Societies and has nearly 4,000 members worldwide.

A quarterly journal - The Hampshire Family Historian - is published by the Society in June, September, December and March, which all members are entitled to receive during their year of membership. In each journal new members' interests are listed. The Editor welcomes articles, family trees, letters, items and comments for publication.

To help with research the HGS maintains the following for the County of Hampshire:
Baptism Index to 1841 (work in progress)
Marriage Index 1538 - 1837
Burial Index 1400 - 1837
1891 Census Index
1851 Census Index
Monumental Inscriptions
Members' Interests
