Danygraig Cemetery was opened for burials on 1st January,1857, according to an announcement in the 'Cambrian' newspaper, although there are entries in the burial registers from October 1856. Danygraig was the first Municipal Cemetery in Swansea, intended to replace the overcrowded and potentially unsanitary graveyards in the town centre. It is situated above the Port Tennant area of Swansea, east of the district of St. Thomas, in a moderately elevated position on the side of Kilvey Hill. At the time it was opened it overlooked an area known as Fabian's Bay, but from the late 1870s the docks on the eastern side of the river Tawe were constructed there. The docks area is now being developed as the 'SA1 development'. The CD contain approx 21,500 entries which are indexed alphabetically by Surname, Forename and give Address, Grave No., Date and Register No. The transcription covers the period 1856 - 1896 . Kingsbridge Cemetery is situated on the B4620, Swansea Road, Kingsbridge near Gorseinon. Although there is no record of its opening date, the earliest date on any memorial in the cemetery is 4th September 1895, recording the interment of a Charles Baker aged 36 years of Upper Lime Street, Gorseinon. The earliest records for the cemetery have unfortunately been lost, supposedly in a fire many years ago. There exists a local story, however, that the first burial was of a gypsy girl: it may have been inspired by the fact that there is a separate section in the graveyard for the travelling community, which has traditionally camped on Garngoch Common in the area. The register dates are from 1903 to 1958 inclusive. Baptism Indexes
The first Baptismal Index contains all baptisms from 1724 to 1930 and assumes that the child has been given the father's surname - the present-day practice.
The second Baptismal Index contains baptisms up to 1812 only, and is based on the father's Christian Name - useful for identifying those baptisms where a patronymic has been used.
The third Baptismal Index contains only those children whose mother's surname differs from the father's, or where only the mother's surname appears. There are two 1724 Hide Details |
