The Bowyer Charity School was established at Denham in 1720 by Sir Wiiliam Bowyer and other charitable persons for instructing 30 poor children in reading, writing and accounts, in the principles of the Church of England, and other learning "proper and useful for their station". A transcription of some of the records kept by the Coroner for the Honour of Ampthill relating to inquests held in Buckinghamshire. Each entry contains at least the date of the inquest, the name of the deceased, the parish in which the inquest was held and the verdict. Most entries also contain the age of the deceased and some include the deceased's relationship to other named persons. Also included in the notebook are details of deaths where an inquest was refused. These usually contain the date of death, the name and age of the deceased, the relationship of the deceased to other persons, a report of circumstances leading to the death and the name of the person who reported the death. The final part of this publication contains some contemporary newspaper reports relating to some of the deaths. Buckinghamshire parishes within the Honour of Ampthill were Newport Pagnell, Moulsoe, Great Linford, Little Linford, Stewkley, Little Brickhill, Bow Brickhill, Wavendon, North Crawley and Swanbourne. The main list, comprising over 3,400 names, is arranged in alphabetic sequence and has a reference number against each name allowing the reader to cross-refer to the list of testators. A 2-character relationship code may also be shown where the person named is stated to have a relationship to the testator. The list of testators is presented in reference number sequence and shows, for each testator, the Oxfordshire Record Office reference, the date of the will, the date the will was proved and the name and location of the testator. A list of relationship codes and their meaning is also provided. This booklet is a transcription of the Court Register for Fenny Stratford Petty Sessions covering the period 1889 to 1898. It includes the date of the hearing, the name of the informant or complainant, the name of the defendant and his or her age if under 16, the nature of the offence or matter of complaint and the minute of adjudication. A transcription of the Parish Memorandum Book created in 1831 by the incumbent of Stoke Poges providing information regarding the character, conditions and families of the poor in the parish. It is not a complete list of inhabitants. The entry for each family includes the name, age and occupation of the head of the household, the name and age of any spouse or lodger, the situation of their residence, name and address of their landlord and annual rent payable. Also included are the names and ages of the children, whether they are married, employed at service, unemployed at home or still at school. In most cases the perceived character of the head of the household is included and in some instances there are notes regarding the children. Hide Details |

The Poll Tax of 1694 was levied in order to fund a 'vigorous' war against France. The basic rate, paid by most individuals aged sixteen and over, was four shillings per annum and was collected in four quarterly instalments. This booklet contains a transcription of the lists of eligible persons within each parish and the amount they were to pay. For some parishes this same list was used when collecting subsequent instalments, being suitably amended to include newcomers and exclude those who had left the parish or died. Other parishes made supplementary lists of persons added and removed since the previous collection for each of the subsequent quarters. Stoke Hundred comprises the Buckinghamshire parishes of Datchet, Denham, Eton, Fulmer, Hedgerley, Horton, Iver, Langley Marish, Stoke Poges, Upton cum Chalvey, Wexham and Wraysbury.
